MY WHY

EMPOWER THE TEACHERS

I firmly believe that political agendas have no place in the classroom. Teachers should be empowered to teach, and children should be empowered to learn. I am committed to ensuring that all of Charleston’s children have the opportunity to receive an excellent public education. This opportunity begins with the work of the Charleston School Board, which is essential to the success of our children and the foundation of our community’s economy.

SAFETY IN SCHOOLS

I am deeply committed to ensuring that our public schools are safe environments—not just in terms of physical safety but also as spaces where teachers can educate without fear of reprisal from parents, staff, or students. Teachers need to know that they are supported and protected as they carry out their vital role in our children’s education. This means creating a culture of respect and open communication, where educators can focus on teaching without the constant worry of backlash for doing their jobs.

UNITY

I support the accurate presentation of facts and history in our curriculum. I commend the CCSD Committee of the Whole for its vote in favor of a locally designed African American Studies honors course, and I look forward to the Board’s final vote on August 26. I believe that offering this course would reinforce the importance of providing students with a comprehensive understanding of history and its impact.

EFFICIENCY IN THE BOARD

With a background in corporate strategic and financial management, I am well-equipped to support the CCSD Board in ensuring financial accountability. Managing resources effectively is one of the Board’s most important responsibilities. CCSD’s 86 schools serve nearly 50,000 students, with more than 40 percent living in poverty, and many requiring special education or social and emotional support. I believe the Board has taken a positive step by adjusting funds to meet the needs of each school, and as a Board member, I would support this approach and remain vigilant in ensuring that all funds dedicated to public schools are spent wisely, and that our schools remain truly public.

MY STANCE

  • Public taxes should be kept in public schools

  • Raising teacher pay and reducing class size

  • Respect for teachers and decisions of education professionals by empowering the educators

  • Improving grade-level reading and increasing the graduation rate by promoting financial literacy programs

  • Safety in schools

Keep public funding within the public school system, as diverting these resources through a voucher program would further weaken an already underfunded educational infrastructure. Public schools, particularly those serving lower-income communities, rely heavily on consistent and equitable funding to maintain essential programs, hire qualified teachers, and provide necessary resources to students. The introduction of a voucher system risks siphoning off critical funds, exacerbating existing disparities and creating an even greater strain on schools that are already struggling to meet basic educational standards. This could lead to larger class sizes, reduced extracurricular programs, and a decline in the quality of education, disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable students. By keeping public funds within the public school system, we ensure that all students, regardless of their socio-economic background, have access to a quality education that prepares them for future success.
